About the painting: Hive
A celebration of nature would not be complete without highlighting the bees who contribute so much to our environment. This painting is in honor of my daughter whose name means honeycomb in Hebrew. About the pendant: Honey-Makers Like bees in a hive we’re all busy busy busy and then what we have to show for our work can be sweet, can be nourishing, but is fleeting; food for the next generation. While honeycombs are geometrically perfect, this one is not. It captures the essence of the hive structure but was made by a very human hand, not programmed for the perfect architecture of the hive. But when it moves it shines, and offers a different kind of gold. About the assemblage: Math in Nature I am constantly in awe of bees and all they do. When I saw this pendant, I knew I needed to play with a honeycomb and to allow the honeycomb to play within the wood. One of my fantasies is to become a beekeeper. |
Hive
They live just six weeks
Their art is six sides
Their wax warmed in crowded cells.
Colonies of nectar-chewing
Water-fanning winged honey-makers, in
Rock crevices, or hollow trees.
What perfect shape might
We make for
What perfect cause
Were we to forage-
Fill our pollen pouches
For the hive?
But we are aware of the Queen,
Sitting on her throne, gazing as we swarm.
She is the artist we wish to please
The artist we wish to be
In our life’s brief hexagon-hemmed
Semicircle of sweetness;
And for a moment
We fancy ourselves
Alone,
As we strive to
Evaporate and
Become honey.
