About the painting: Earthshine
A new moon cannot usually be seen. We might not always notice when something new has begun, but sometimes - if we are aligned in just the right way - we might get a sliver of recognition, a highlight of a shadow, a glimpse of a reflection of what is coming. Many thanks to my astronomer friend who explained the beauty of Earthshine to me as this cycle of work was ending and a new one is set to begin. About the pendant: Earthshine This pendant explores light and darkness, and the ways that they can be intertwined through reflection. Bright silver reflecting dark, and dark beads with an iridescent surface that reflects light back out. The central stone, moon-bright, is surrounded and protected by a shield of metal, and the darkness of the background looks darker because of the central light. About the assemblage: Dance of Shadow and Light There is no light if there is no darkness and there is no darkness if there is no light; both within me and in everything around me. The black sand belongs to my son and was collected in the Canary Islands. The hidden iridescence of the shell is a surprise of light amidst the darkness. |
Earthshine
Suddenly -
it seems -
my moon has risen.
Shy crescent striving
for glow above the
undulating waters,
Tides of time
reflecting all that
I’m not;
my old self
in my new self’s
arms,
my darkness exposed
by the proximity
to my own light.
